Choosing a name for your new dog is an
important decision. The name will be used for the rest of your dog’s
life, which on the average is between 12 to 14 years.
On average, you will be using your dogs name over 30,000 times
during the course of its life. It has been estimated that 1 in 5 dog
owners want to change their dogs name in the first year they have
it. Below are some tips to help you select a good name for your dog.
Tips On Choosing Your Dogs Name
Avoid names that sound similar to your
basic commands, Kit might be mistaken with sit, Neil might be
mistaken heel, Ray might be mistaken stay, and Fletch might be
mistaken fetch. Choosing names like these could confuse the dog.
One-syllable names, like Jack or Jill, make learning and recognition
somewhat easier for your dog; however, commands are usually
one-syllable words and may confuse the dog. Choosing names with two
or three syllables ending in a vowel sound helps the dog
differentiate its name from commands.
Try to give your dog a name that sounds differently than the names
of your family members. Your dog may get confused with a similar
sounding name and may respond when you call a family members name.
When choosing your dogs name, you may want to consider the breed,
personality, physical characteristics of the dog.
Sometimes, waiting a few days after getting your new dog before
choosing its name can make the process a little easier. Take some
time to get to know your new dog to allow its personality to
surface.
Remember that you may be using your dog’s name in public, try to
choose a name that you would be proud of and that represents
the dog reasonably.
Avoid giving your dog a name that it will outgrow, give it a name
for the long haul.
Avoid giving your dog a trendy name, what is in today may be out
tomorrow.
After you have chosen a name for your dog, don’t forget to get a dog
tag with the dogs name and your phone number.
